12s All-Stars Run Ends as State Runners Up

It was going to take a buzzsaw to stop our 12s All Stars this year, and that's what they ran into Thursday as their summer run came to an end in the state championship game.

It was a summer to remember for the squad managed by Tom Long as they claimed a District 6 title in dominating fashion, outscoring their opponents 30-7. After a 20-0 win over Morrsiville in their opener, they defeated South Durham and Wilson en route to the banner.

The state tournament turned out to be an as-advertised gauntlet as the team played six games in six days - testing their endourance, their pitching depth and their parents' work schedules. A win over North Asheville got things started before suffering a heartbreaking, last-inning loss to East Chatham. They bounced back to win their next three in the losers bracket -- 15-6 over Cherryville, 3-0 over Lake Norman and 16-1 over East Chatham in a rematch.

When weather forced the championship game to an 11a start on Thursday, Greenville's Tar Heel LL turned to Rob Rhoades who struck out 8 of the first 9 batters he faced. That spelled the end, but it was not without the memories of an amazing run.
